It’s that time of year again- Stingray Cove is back at the Memphis Zoo! We are so excited to be partnering again with Living Exhibits to bring sharks and stingrays back to the zoo this year. Stingray Cove has two species of stingray- Southern Stingray and Cownose Rays- and two species of shark- Brown Banded Bamboo Shark and White Spotted Bamboo Shark. Both species of stingray are very active and eager to meet new visitors. Our sharks, however, are nocturnal, so you might notice they aren’t as active during the day. They might swim around the pool a few times, but for the most part, you will catch them laying by the waterfall or in the middle of the pool observing their surroundings.
Stingray Cove is an immersive exhibit where you can feed and touch our animals. When you feed our stingrays, they are getting a mix of shrimp, fish, and squid. Don’t worry, your feed cups aren’t the only food they are getting today! They will also be fed by a method called broadcast feeding which is a process where food is scattered through the pool and allows the stingray to forage for its food and exhibit the same behaviors as it would in the wild to feed.
You will also learn all about sharks and stingrays from our animal interpreters at the pool. They will teach you all kinds of cool facts- for instance, did you know a group of stingrays is referred to as a fever? You will also learn about shark and stingray conservation and research being done to protect wild populations. In fact, your admission into Stingray Cove goes towards helping conservation and research efforts. How cool that you get to play a role in caring for these beautiful creatures!
Stingray Cove is open 10:00 am-5:00 pm every day! Tickets for admission are $2/members and $3/nonmembers. Feed cups are available to purchase for $2. Make plans to come by and meet our fever today!
