Release of Western Striped Newts

Today is quite an exciting day for me.  Its also a big day for Conservation at the Memphis Zoo.  Today I packed up tiny Western Striped newts to be sent to Florida for release into the wild.  This is the first of hopefully many shipments that will be made this year.   This is actually a project I've been involved in since 2010.  In 2010 the Coastal Plains Institute and the US Forest Service began conducting surveys of the Apalachicola National Forest to see if... Introducing Shrimp!

If you've visited the Herpetarium recently, you may have noticed a new animal in one of the larger exhibits, along with a "Do Not Disturb" sign.  While most adults seem to question what this new addition is, almost every child guesses correctly with "It's a Komodo Dragon!!"  That she is...please help us welcome Shrimp to the Memphis Zoo!   Her addition to the collection is a big milestone for the Reptile Department; she was brought here specifically to be part of... Happy Birthday, Teva!

I can’t believe it has been a year since the staff was anxiously waiting for Callie to give birth. Last June 27th, around noon, we were blessed with a 16 lb female sea lion pup.  We named her Teva (pronounced Tee – Va).  We thought a beach sandal would be a good name for a sea lion.  Teva has been doing great, and has become quite the diva.  As all sea lion pups do, Teva had many milestones she had to reach during her first year or so.  Although Callie behaved like a... Love Birds

You may have noticed our friendly Leadbeater’s Cockatoo, “Hansel,” has a new friend accompanying him in his new exhibit in the Tropical Bird House. His new girlfriend’s name is “Bonnie” and came to the Memphis Zoo in May 2012 from Denver Zoo.  They were off exhibit to give them the privacy during their lengthy introduction process. On September 4th, 2012 these two potential “lovebirds” were moved on exhibit to their little “love nest” to the right of the back bird flight.  “Bonnie” has... Read More

NEWTS, NEWTS, and MORE NEWTS!

Hi, my name is Bryan Summerford and I am an aquarist here at the Memphis Zoo.  You may think working in an aquarium is all about fish, but in my case it definitely is not!  One of the biggest projects I’m working on right now is a breeding program for a threatened newt species called the Western Striped Newt (Notophthalmus perstriatus).  This is also a big conservation project for the Zoo because we are working with the U.S. Forest Service and the Coastal Plains...
