Translocation success and topophilia

By Fields Falcone, China Keeper  Four days after the scheduled departure and a different (smaller) boat altogether, a (smaller) MAC crew along with the CNMI biologists and the captain left Tinian for the tiny volcanic island of Guguan with nearly 100 birds in tow. Because of the late departure and the change of vessel, not all of us were able to go – five brave souls took to the waves in unchartered fluid territory for the MAC Program. In the past, the CNMI government has... Read More

Grizzly Bear vs. ORCA Cooler

A grizzly bear versus a cooler? In the trenches

By Fields Falcone, China Keeper   Netting the birds is complete! With a target number of 50 birds each, we ended with 47 Tinian monarchs and 51 bridled white-eyes. The monarchs posed a challenge… They live deep in the forest and required over 45 net sites to reach our goal, practically a net apiece. The white-eyes, on the other hand, loved to fly out across the WWII runway cross-roads we use as access to the habitat and needed only a few high nets and a little patience. After birds were...
