The Budgie House is Open!

The Budgie House, home to the Zoo's flock of budgies, is open for the Summer! It's included with general admission. Feeding sticks are $1. Budgies, also known as parakeets, are native to Australia. Their name is derived from an Australian slang word “budgery,” meaning good. Budgies are psittacines, which means they are seed eaters. They have cone-shaped beaks that allow them to easily eat seeds. Read More

Memphis Zoo Welcomes New Rhinos

MEMPHIS, TENN. – The Memphis Zoo is pleased to announce the addition of a pair of Southern white rhinoceroses. Memphis Zoo Mourns the Loss of African Lion

Memphis Zoo Mourns the Loss of African Lion    MEMPHIS, TENN. - The Memphis Zoo is deeply saddened to announce the death of “Savannah,” one of the Zoo’s African lionesses. Savannah died March 12 at the age of 20, after her health began to dramatically decline earlier this month.   As Zoo keepers and veterinarians began to notice her decline, she was put on Zoo hospice care to closely monitor her health and keep her as comfortable as possible. Baby Camel Born at the Memphis Zoo

MEMPHIS, TENN. – What’s 68 pounds, 3 feet tall and less than one week old? Our baby camel! The Memphis Zoo is pleased to announce a camel calf was born Thursday, June 12, after a gestation of 13 months.  The calf, a male, was born to parents “Mona Lisa” and “Solomon.” Mother and calf are doing well and can already be seen on exhibit at the Camel Excursion area at the east end of the Zoo.
